First Solar Trip from Westminster to Lechlade

EBA member Mike Manisty is the first person to complete a solar-powered voyage up the Thames from Westminster to its furthest navigable point at Lechlade. The journey of around 150 miles against the current and in less than ideal weather conditions in June and July was made in Mike's 12 ft wooden boat Corvelia and raised several thousand pounds for the charity Action for Prisoners' Families. Royal Rewards for Hybrid Boats

EBA members were presented with medals by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh at an awards ceremony for boats with hybrid electric propulsion systems. Before the presentation the Duke met the winners and discussed details of their boats.

First solar voyage from Europe to the USA

On 8th May 2007 the Swiss solar powered catamaran Sun21 arrived in New York at the end of a 7,000 mile journey from Basel in Switzerland. This is the first Atlantic crossing by a motorised boat using not one drop of oil. Sun21 was built by MW-Line SA and is powered by two 8kW Agni Motors. The 60 square metres of solar panels produce up to 44 kWh per day.

This achievement serves as a powerful example of responsible energy use in practice.  It also is impressive evidence of the suitability of solar technology for high-sea voyages. more details

picture: Mary Gordon Trust

The Mary Gordon was built in 1898 by Sergeants of Eel Pie Island on the Thames of teak planking on oak frames.  At that time electric boats or launches were very popular on the Thames and at 52 ft in length The Mary Gordon was one of the largest, she could carry 75 adults or 120 children in comfort.

The Heritage Lottery Fund award will enable the Mary Gordon Trust to embark on a series of planning and consultation programmes which are vital if they are to achieve their aim of restoring this Victorian electric pleasure launch to her former condition >>> more
